Behind the Scenes

Here at Jetpets one of the most frequently asked questions by fur parents is ‘what happens once I drop my pet off to you?’

Our Jetpets transit lounges are located within close proximity to major airports around Australia. Once a pet has been dropped off to our transit lounge, you know they are in the care of our pet handlers, who are all animal lovers and will ensure that your pet is taken care of every step of the way. All pets spend time in designated pet areas (outside of their travel crate), and will be taken for a walk to stretch their legs and are always kept completely hydrated.

Our resident vets are located at our transit lounges to complete all necessary vet work for our international travellers, and to keep an eye on all pets who are travelling within Australia.

When it comes time for your pet to be checked in for their flight, our pet handlers will place your pet into their travel crate and transport them to the airport. All pets are checked into the freight department of the airline they are travelling on. Our pet handlers have great relationships with the airline staff to ensure this process is as smooth and simple as possible.

Your pet will be checked in for their flight, weighed in their travel crate, and will wait in a climate controlled area before they are taken to be loaded onto their flight.

Pets are last to be loaded onto the flight. The pet cabin is air pressured, climate controlled and dimly lit, just like the main cabin. Your pet will experience the same sounds and feelings as us, except they have a lot more leg room! Their travel crate is securely fastened to avoid movement.

Upon arrival at their destination, pets are first to be offloaded from the aircraft and will be taken to the freight department at the airport. Here a Jetpets pet handler will greet them, stretch their legs and ensure they are hydrated before the most exciting part, their onward journey to their new home and to be reunited with their family.

Helping your cat settle into a new home

Helping your cat settle into a new home | Cat Tips | Jetpets

It’s certainly no secret to cat owners, that sometimes cats can feel uncomfortable in new or unfamiliar surroundings. If you are introducing your cat to your new home, then it is important to take it slow and control your cat’s exposure to the new stimulus. When introducing your cat to a new home, try to create one room in your home where you can let the cat out of their travel crate and allow them to explore these new surroundings at their own pace.

Ensure that the doors and windows are closed to eliminate them escaping the area and place familiar items such as blankets or toys around the room.

Another great tip is to utilise a Feliway diffuser. Feliway diffusers are a fantastic way to create a peaceful and calming environment which can make adjusting to new stimuli less stressful for cats. Cats communicate through natural pheromones and the diffuser works in much the same way as a regular fragrance diffuser, spreading this comforting pheromone message in the cat’s environment.

Just screw the pheromone vial into the Feliway diffuser and plug it into an electrical socket and leave to diffuse the pheromone continuously. Ensure that the diffuser isn’t blocked by cupboards or doors to allow for complete permeation of the new environment.

As your cat begins to adjust to the new environment over the course of several days, start to introduce them to more and more rooms in your house and monitor their behaviour. You can even utilise multiple diffusers to create that comforting environment throughout the house.

By controlling your cat’s environment and using a Feliway Diffuser you can decrease the time it takes to get your cat use to their new surroundings, which means more time enjoying your pet’s company.

Are you planning a holiday?

The great Australian holiday is a tradition that Australians will never let go of. Our country was made to be traversed by car, caravan and plane. Setting off on an adventure from Victoria to Western Australia can often feel like an international holiday due to the enormous size of our country.

There have been huge improvements to the flexibility of the Australian Holiday too. Pet friendly accommodation allows you to keep the family together to share in the adventure.

Jetpets makes this all-inclusive holiday possible by taking care of the pickup and drop-off of your family’s best friend. We take the stress out of arranging travel for your pet and allow the whole family to stay together. Often our customers report that it is cheaper to fly their pet to their favourite holiday destination rather than pay for expensive kennels and boarding.

In addition to the financial benefits it’s great for your pet to explore new environments, test their senses and have new experiences. Is there anything more fun than playing fetch with the family dog on a beautiful Australian beach?

Travelling Internationally with your pet – Frequently Asked Questions

It’s an exciting time in your household as the whole family is getting ready for a big overseas trip!

In need of a few handy hints to get prepared? We get the low-down from one of Jetpets Resident Vets Katherine.

Frequently Asked Questions | Jetpets | International Pet Transport | Pet Carrier

Q: What top tips would you give to pet owners preparing their pets for a long haul flight?

A: We always recommend pet owners start the process of familiarising their pets with the travel crate early (you can find some handy hints on how to do this here.) Other things you can do to help include taking them on lots of car journeys in the travel crate so they get used to the crate and the movement, remain calm around them on the day of departure (we know it’s hard!) and add a recently worn old T shirt to the travel crate so they have the owners scent to calm them on the flight.

Q: Will my pet be fed before they fly?

A: We do not recommend feeding your pet within 8 hours of their flight as it may cause travel sickness. They will receive plenty of water throughout their journey.

Q: Will my pet get a chance to stretch their legs before they fly?

A: Yes, if you have a dog, our team ensure your pet is taken for a good walk before they fly. They will also relax in the Jetpets Transit Lounge before their flight, where they can walk around.

Cats will have the opportunity to stretch their legs in the Jetpets Transit Lounge before their flight.

Q: Why do pets have to be at the airport 3 hours before departure?

Like humans, pets are required to check in early for their flight too. The airlines require pets to be checked in 3 hours before international departure.

Q: Who loads them onto the plane?

After we check your pet in for their flight, the friendly airline staff will load them onto the plane.

Q: Where will my pet sit on the plane?

Your pet will travel in the pet’s cabin. The pets cabin is air pressured, climate controlled and dimly lit. Your pets will experience the same sounds and feelings as us, except they have a lot more leg room!

Q: Do pets get jet lag Katherine?

A: Just like humans, it’s possible that pets may also experience jet lag to a lesser extent. I’ve had the odd person tell me they think their pet had jet lag for a few days after their flight. Older pets in particular might take a bit longer to get used to their new time zone after a long flight.

Q: Do pets having any issues with a sudden change in climate?

If your pets are travelling from a hot to a very cold climate I would make sure they are kept inside or at least make sure they have a good warm coat to put on when they do go outside. If they are travelling from a cold to a hot climate, only walk them early in the morning or late in the evening and make sure they always have plenty of water and shade available (or keep them in the air-con).

An A List Move!

Today we have another exciting move to share with you!

Our team recently had the pleasure of transporting Orlando Bloom’s new pup Junior, a male Sarplaninac, from Melbourne to his home in Los Angeles!

Junior was a surprise for Orlando’s son Flynn, with our pet handler Mike delivering the pup to their front door (and witnessing Junior meeting his new family for the very first time.) What an amazing surprise – we can’t wait to hear how Junior settles into his new home with Orlando and Flynn!

Behind The Scenes At The Airport

Did you know…

The experience your pet has while flying is actually very similar to the one we have as humans (except in a travel crate our pets actually have much more leg room than us!). The air temperature is controlled and pressurised, and the lights are dimly light, making for a relaxing travel journey…

Have you often wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the airport?

Our animal ambassador Sahara is here to show you in the video below.
