What Happens to Your Pet After a Domestic Flight in Australia?

Sending your pet on a flight, even a short domestic one, comes with a very particular kind of worry. You’re at the airport, or already at your destination, and somewhere between here and there, your dog or cat is making their way through the sky without you.

It’s completely natural to have questions: Are they comfortable? Do they know what’s happening? What exactly is going on right now?

The good news is that for pets flying with Jetpets, there’s a clear, carefully managed process from the moment their flight lands to the moment they’re back in your arms. Here’s exactly what that looks like.

What’s It Like for Your Pet on the Plane?

Before we jump to the “after”, it helps to know what your pet experiences during the flight itself, because it’s probably more comfortable than you’d expect.

Pets travel in the hold of the aircraft in their airline-approved travel crate, which is specifically sized to give them room to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

The hold is climate-controlled with the temperature set to around 18°C, it’s dimly lit so your pet can see their surroundings without being overstimulated, and the captain of the aircraft is always informed that an animal is on board.

In terms of what they feel and hear? It’s quite similar to the passenger cabin: the same hum of the engines, the same gentle air pressure. The main difference is they have considerably more legroom than most of us do in economy.

What Happens When Your Pet’s Flight Lands?

This is the part most pet owners are curious about, and rightly so.

Once the aircraft touches down, your pet doesn’t simply wait in baggage claim. Jetpets’ trained pet handlers collect your pet directly and, where your itinerary includes a transit lounge city (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, or Perth), they’re taken to the Jetpets Pet Transit Lounge, our purpose-built facilities located close to each of those major airports.

At the transit lounge, your pet gets out of their crate, has a chance to stretch their legs, go for a walk if needed, and have some water before the next stage of their journey. It’s a proper comfort stop, not just a holding bay. Our handlers are experienced, qualified people who genuinely love animals, and your pet will be in caring hands throughout.

What if there’s a flight delay?

Jetpets teams are in direct contact with our airline partners who will inform us if there are significant delays. Where there are significant delays or cancellations we will ensure you are updated on the situation and ensure your pets welfare and safety is our number one priority.

If your pet experiences a delay of more than three hours at one of our major transit lounge locations, they’ll be brought back to the lounge (where possible) rather than waiting at the airport. They’ll have a chance to relax out of their crate until travel resumes, just as we would want for ourselves given the opportunity. Jetpets has a 24/7 emergency number for clients to contact where these delays may occur outside normal business hours.

How Will You Know What’s Happening?

You don’t have to wonder. One of the things Jetpets customers tell us they value most is being kept in the loop throughout their pet’s journey, and we take that seriously.
Depending on your pet’s personalised travel itinerary, you can expect to receive pet travel updates via SMS or email at key milestones. These can include:

  • Check-in at the airport
  • An update from the comfort stop (sometimes including a photo or video)
  • Confirmation of collection from the airport
  • Notification of delivery to your door

It won’t replace the moment you’re reunited, but it goes a long way to making the wait feel a little easier.

How Does Your Pet Get Home?

With Jetpets’ door-to-door service, a pet handler will deliver your pet directly to your home in one of our temperature-controlled vehicles. It’s the most seamless option, particularly if you’re still in the middle of a move or don’t yet have transport sorted at the other end.

Alternatively, you can collect your pet directly from the transit lounge, which some owners love. It means the reunion happens sooner, in a calm and familiar environment with staff on hand if you need them.

If your new home isn’t quite ready, or your own travel schedule means the timing doesn’t line up, Jetpets can also arrange pet accommodation and boarding through a network of trusted partners. Our handlers can check your pet in and collect them again when the time is right.

Helping Your Pet Settle In After Their Flight

Most pets bounce back from a domestic flight remarkably well, especially when the journey has been managed carefully. But it’s still worth giving them a little extra grace in the hours and days that follow.

When your pet arrives home, try to keep things calm and let them decompress in their own time. Make sure they have access to fresh water, their familiar bedding, and a favourite toy or two for comfort.
