Rescue dogs - At Jetpets we are passionate about rescue pets

As you know by now, here at Jetpets we are passionate about rescue pets. That’s why we were excited to hear from Anne at the RSPCA NSW about some recent rescue success stories!

Tinkerbelle (now named Belle and pictured far right) and Sandy (now named Essie and pictured right) were transported from Sydney to “Rescued With Love” in Melbourne in April. Kae from Rescued with Love kindly offered to take on these two girls which they affectionately named the “Button Sisters” as they were cute as buttons!

Both girls had severe skin infections due to neglect and were in need of some TLC and time to recover before they could be desexed and eventually rehomed. Kae has been taking wonderful care of these 2 girls and their progress can be seen on the Rescued With Love Facebook page.

DeDe (pictured right) was originally at the RSPCA’s Shoalhaven Shelter where she was fostered with her brothers and sisters. A few of the litter were actually deaf so finding the perfect home was a little trickier than usual.

DeDe was spotted on the ‘adoptapet’ website by Pam who lives in Melbourne. Pam had been searching for the right dog for awhile and finally found DeDe. She contacted the RSPCA Shoalhaven Shelter and had a long discussion with the manager to figure out if she was the right person for DeDe. Of course she was the perfect mum and we arranged DeDe’s flight down to Melbourne to her forever home!

The Winter Blues

With the cooler weather well and truly upon us, we are often asked by owners about their pet’s needs in winter.

So we thought we’d clear things up! Here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions…

Winter Blues - how to look after your dog or cat in winterQ: Is it important to exercise our pets in winter, even when it’s freezing outside?

A: Winter activities will vary widely depending on what kind of pet you have, their personality, and the severity of the weather. When it comes to dogs, they really need to get out all year round, even in colder weather. Dogs who really enjoy the outdoors and colder temperatures can have just as much exercise in the winter as the summer. You can keep your walks shorter for those who don’t enjoy the winter weather as much.

Q: Are coats and jackets a good idea for pets who spend time outside during winter?

A: Some dogs with thin coats will benefit from a jacket, and find freezing temperatures much more enjoyable with the extra layer!

Q: Does my dog or cat need to eat more in winter to help survive the cold?

A: Because people and animals often are less active in the winter months, we often find that people need to feed their dogs less during the winter. If you and your dog are very active, or if your dog is primarily outside, then you may need to increase their food proportionally.

Q: Does my pet still need lots of fresh water, even though it’s cold outside and they may not be as thirsty?

A: Fresh water is always necessary, even if your dog isn’t drinking as much as during the hot summer.

Our Top Winter Tips:

Particularly cold winter’s days can be uncomfortable for slim, younger or older dogs when it comes to nap time. We suggest elevating their bed off the ground where possible, and placing a hot water bottle (with warm not boiling water) into their bed or kennel. This will soon make for a comfortable place to rest!

Pippa’s Reunion!

Did you hear about Pippa the cat, who survived 49 days without food or drink after becoming accidentally trapped in a shipping container and travelling interstate? Well now for some good news for this lucky cat… We were very proud to reunite Pippa with her owners today!

On 20 February, Pippa the cat found herself a snug spot in the neighbour’s shipping container in Darwin which was then transported all the way to Brisbane. Miraculously Pippa survived her ordeal after 49 days without food or drink. Pippa has remained in Brisbane where she has been recovering with a foster carer and under the watchful eye of a vet. Pippa has now returned to good health and today we proudly flew Pippa from Brisbane to Darwin to be happily reunited with her owners Rebecca and daughter Emily.

Rebecca and daughter Emily adore their cat Pippa and have missed her terribly. Rebecca feared that Pippa would need to be permanently re-homed in Brisbane, concerned that another travel journey would be too traumatic. When the story of Pippa’s plight came to our attention, we contacted Rebecca with an offer to reunite her with Pippa. As you know, we fly thousands and thousands of pets around the country and globe every year, and reassured Rebecca that it was possible to safely and comfortably fly Pippa home.

With the fantastic news earlier this week that Pippa had returned to wellness, Rebecca was thrilled to hear that this reunion could take place today. First thing this morning we collected Pippa from her foster home in Brisbane, where she was made to feel comfortable and content in her travel crate, ready for her flight home. Thankfully and as expected the return trip home was far less eventful, with flights running on time and Pippa comfortable in her travel crate. At the other end, we were ready to collect Pippa at Darwin airport, where she was transported in a purpose built vehicle to her home.

Of course, the best bit comes next. After an eventful and worrying four months, at long last Pippa was reunited with her owners Rebecca and Emily this afternoon. It was tears and hugs of joy (and purrs) all round. We feel very proud to have played a part in reuniting this family.

A Pug Wedding

It was a match made in dodgy heaven…

Have you heard about Jasmine & Jasper the pugs? (If not, check out their story here.) These two doggy partners in crime were married in a fundraising event for Pug Rescue on May 17th, at the beautiful West Beach Bathers Pavilion in St Kilda.

The event was attended by 300+ people and 60 pugs guests, with the pug bride dressed by a renowned Melbourne based couture gown designer! It was a lavish affair, with drinks, canapés, wedding cake and music following the adorable ceremony, as well as some inspiring stories of rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming from the Pug Rescue team.

You can read all about the event, and Pug Rescue here.

Here at Jetpets, we were proud to sponsor the pug wedding and support the Pug Rescue team.

Pets At Work

As you know, at Jetpets we are ‘pet people’, so it makes sense that our workplace is filled with our favourite furry friends! We love that we are lucky enough to be able to bring our pets to work, not only does it make the day that much more enjoyable, we get to spend more quality time with our furry companions!

Did you know that it can actually be beneficial to your health and productivity to have pets in the workplace? Time to have a quiet word with your boss we think!

According to studies, a ‘pro-pet’ workplace can have an amazing list of benefits, including increased productivity, improved morale, reduced employee absenteeism and stress-related ailments like heart disease and diabetes. A 2012 study also found that  ‘pets triggered workplace interactions that would not normally take place,’ meaning that by having furry friends around, your office will become a more social, fun and satisfying environment for employees.

We think that’s conclusive evidence! Bring on more ‘Puppy Fridays’…

Check out some of the furry friends that love to hang out at Jetpets.

A New Arrival

We were very excited when we heard the great news about the birth of a baby gorilla at Melbourne Zoo!

A beautiful, healthy baby was born to mum Kimya, in the presence of the baby’s father Otana and the three older females in the group, Julia, G-Ann, and Yuska.

The birth of a baby gorilla at Melbourne Zoo

The special arrival is the first gorilla birth at Melbourne Zoo since 2000, thanks to the international endangered species breeding program which matched up two young gorillas born on the opposite sides of the world. Mum Kimya came to Melbourne Zoo from Taronga Zoo in Sydney, while we were very proud to transport father Otana to Melbourne Zoo from Howlett’s Wild Animal Park in Kent, England in 2013.

(Read more about other Jetpets Zoo moves here.)

Primate Department Manager Harna Burton says ‘We had high expectations of Kimya because she was mother-raised at Taronga Zoo and had some great experience watching older females raise their babies.

‘She seems to have learned from observing those behaviours, as she has been a textbook Mum so far.

‘From the time Kimya picked the baby up right after giving birth, she hasn’t put the little one down. Such young gorilla babies need the body heat of their mothers to stay warm, so we have been monitoring this very carefully,’ Harna explains.

The new arrival coincides with Zoo’s Victoria’s ‘They’re Calling On You’ campaign to protect gorillas on the brink of extinction.

Did you know that one of the biggest threats to gorillas is the illegal mining of coltan, a mineral used in mobile phones? You can help protect gorillas in their natural habitat simply by donating your old phone:

  • Money raised from donated phones will support Gorilla Doctors, an organisation working to protect Eastern Lowland (Grauer’s) and Mountain Gorillas.
  • Donated phones will be refurbished and resold or recycled for their parts. This gives the phones a second life and reduces the demands for coltan mining in threatened gorilla habitat.

For more information on how you can get involved, visit: http://www.zoo.org.au/get-involved/act-for-wildlife/theyre-calling-on-you

And for those excited to see the gorgeous new arrival, all Zoo visitors are now welcome to visit, initially at the restricted time of 11am to 3pm. Keepers will be monitoring the new mother and baby carefully to determine when the visiting hours can be extended from the 11am to 3pm period.

Easter with our Furry Friends

Easter with our Furry FriendsEaster is a time for celebration with the family, and even we are partial to an Easter Egg Hunt or two! But at Easter time, it’s important to plan ahead to avoid any nasty surprises, including consumption of chocolate by our dogs (and other unfavourable food and drinks including sultanas from hot-cross buns, caffeine and alcohol) that can have a potentially deadly affect on your dog.

Jetpets Vet Dr Lucy explains that “chocolate contains a chemical compound called theobromide and is toxic to our furry friends.” Therefore it is important to keep chocolate out of reach and when planning your Easter Egg Hunt, avoid hiding Easter eggs close to the ground if your dog is on the prowl! Remind your children and guests not to feed the dog any type of chocolate or toxic foods. Better yet? Make sure your dog is supervised at all times, so there is no chance for a sneaky snack on an Easter egg.

If your dog does manage to eat chocolate or another toxic substance, it is important to stay calm and contact a Vet immediately. There is a window of approximately 15 to 60 minutes after ingestion that a Veterinarian may be able to successfully flush the chocolate from the dog’s stomach.

Symptoms:

If you’re worried that your dog has eaten chocolate, these are the key symptoms Dr Lucy wants you to look out for:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Hyperactivity (restlessness, muscle twitching)
  • Lethargy
  • Inappetence and excessive thirst

Even if there are no signs and symptoms, if you suspect your furry friend has eaten some chocolate, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your Vet for a thorough examination as this could save your dog’s life.
