5 reasons for taking your pet on holiday with you

We all know it, that look your pet gives you when you’re about to set off on your holiday without them (those puppy dog eyes make our heart melt). You don’t have to feel guilty about leaving them behind anymore – here’s 5 reasons you should to take them with you!

Don’t have to worry

No matter how much you trust your neighbour, we all still worry about how are pets are doing while we’re away! Wondering whether they’ve been on their daily walk, or if they’re scratching up the couch. It’s only natural to wonder what our pets are getting up to! We’ve got a quick fix for that holiday anxiety – take your pets with you!

Time to explore

Travelling is one of life’s greatest pleasures! Nothing enriches the heart and soul than exploring a new place. That’s why taking your pet on holidays with you is a great idea.

Travelling with your pet gives you a great excuse to get out and explore. Whether you head out to the local park, or hire a car and head to a dog friendly café or beach, we can guarantee that you’ll visit places you wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

Get active

Between trying out local delicacies, and spending time relaxing, sometimes it can be hard to find the motivation to get outside while on a well-deserved holiday. Luckily, travelling with your pets gets you outside and moving!

Not only will you get to see more of the city you’re visiting, exercising on holiday is also extremely beneficial for your pet.

Pet specific activities

There’s no doubt that your pet will have more fun on holiday than they would have at home! Our pets love to explore and experience new places just as much as we do, so try and set aside a day dedicated to them. Whether they love people watching at cafes, or love nothing more than chasing a tennis ball at the park, we know they’d love anything you planned just for them.

Share your holiday with your best friend

Travelling means you get to explore new places and learn new things, but it’s always better shared! You’re sure to create special memories with your pet by your side, and the cuddles at the end of the day are always an added bonus.

Planning your next vacation? Why not take your best friend with you! At Jetpets we are here to help! How to keep your pets happy as the weather cools down

Admit it, even if you prefer summer, you love cuddling up with warm blankets in winter! For those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, the cooler months are here, so it’s time to get your coats out from the back of the closet and dust off those beanies! While we have the luxury of indulging in a hot chocolate, our pets might find it a bit more difficult to adjust to the colder climate. That’s why we’ve put together a few tips to help keep your pets happy throughout the cooler months!

Cosy bedding

There’s no more satisfying feeling then jumping under the covers of your warm bed after a cool winter’s day, we’re sure our pets love it too! There’s a few different ways you can adjust your pet’s bedding for winter time, so here’s a few tips to ensure they get a cosy night’s sleep.

Outdoor pets

If your pet is comfortable staying outside during the colder months, make sure you’re making a few adjustments to accommodate the change in weather. Here’s a few tips for your outdoor pets!

  • Move their crate or kennel under cover, so they’re not disturbed by rain or hail.
  • Pop your pets favourite blanket inside their kennel or crate
  • Leave your pets with their own hot water bottle to cuddle up to! Make sure you let it cool down slightly before handing it over to your pet
  • Get their cosy knits on! A jumper that covers their stomach will help keep them warm through the chilly winter nights

Indoor pets

If your pets are getting older, it’s a great idea to keep them inside throughout the colder months. This will help aid sore joints or any aches or pains they might have. Head to your local pet store to grab your pets their own blankets so they can have a cosy night’s sleep!

Dinner time

Like us, our pets tend to burn more calories during the colder months, as our bodies try to keep us warm. So, a consistent diet is key to keeping your pets happy throughout winter! It’s always a good idea to discuss your pets diet with your vet before making any changes to their feeding schedule.

Exercise

Just like us, our pets may feel less inclined to get up and moving during the colder months. We’d prefer to be inside on the couch too, but it’s important to make sure your pets are still getting enough exercise throughout winter. Here’s a few ways you and your pets can get active this winter:

  • Head to an indoor dog park! Your pup can still socialise, explore and exercise while sheltered from the weather
  • Invest in some new scratching posts for your cats, or if you’re feeling up to it – build your own!
  • Take advantage of your pet’s favourite toys, playing fetch inside for half an hour in the morning and in the afternoon, is a great way to get your pet moving when the weather isn’t looking too great

Travelling Internationally with your pet – Frequently Asked Questions

It’s an exciting time in your household as the whole family is getting ready for a big overseas trip!

In need of a few handy hints to get prepared? We get the low-down from one of Jetpets Resident Vets Katherine.

Frequently Asked Questions | Jetpets | International Pet Transport | Pet Carrier

Q: What top tips would you give to pet owners preparing their pets for a long haul flight?

A: We always recommend pet owners start the process of familiarising their pets with the travel crate early (you can find some handy hints on how to do this here.) Other things you can do to help include taking them on lots of car journeys in the travel crate so they get used to the crate and the movement, remain calm around them on the day of departure (we know it’s hard!) and add a recently worn old T shirt to the travel crate so they have the owners scent to calm them on the flight.

Q: Will my pet be fed before they fly?

A: We do not recommend feeding your pet within 8 hours of their flight as it may cause travel sickness. They will receive plenty of water throughout their journey.

Q: Will my pet get a chance to stretch their legs before they fly?

A: Yes, if you have a dog, our team ensure your pet is taken for a good walk before they fly. They will also relax in the Jetpets Transit Lounge before their flight, where they can walk around.

Cats will have the opportunity to stretch their legs in the Jetpets Transit Lounge before their flight.

Q: Why do pets have to be at the airport 3 hours before departure?

Like humans, pets are required to check in early for their flight too. The airlines require pets to be checked in 3 hours before international departure.

Q: Who loads them onto the plane?

After we check your pet in for their flight, the friendly airline staff will load them onto the plane.

Q: Where will my pet sit on the plane?

Your pet will travel in the pet’s cabin. The pets cabin is air pressured, climate controlled and dimly lit. Your pets will experience the same sounds and feelings as us, except they have a lot more leg room!

Q: Do pets get jet lag Katherine?

A: Just like humans, it’s possible that pets may also experience jet lag to a lesser extent. I’ve had the odd person tell me they think their pet had jet lag for a few days after their flight. Older pets in particular might take a bit longer to get used to their new time zone after a long flight.

Q: Do pets having any issues with a sudden change in climate?

If your pets are travelling from a hot to a very cold climate I would make sure they are kept inside or at least make sure they have a good warm coat to put on when they do go outside. If they are travelling from a cold to a hot climate, only walk them early in the morning or late in the evening and make sure they always have plenty of water and shade available (or keep them in the air-con).
