Fun ways to mix up your exercise routine with your animals

One of our favourite ways to motivate ourselves to exercise is to take our pets with us, but sometimes even that can get a little dull when walking the same path, or running around the same oval, day after day!

 This year, make a resolution to mix up your exercise routine with your animals so you both can have some fun bonding and reaping the health benefits of physical exercise.

Here are some great ideas:

Try somewhere new:

Perhaps one of the most simplest and easiest ways to have fun when you exercise with your pets is to try a new location. This could be taking your dogs to the beach, on a hike, or to a new park you’ve been dying to find the time to go to.

Let your dog guide you:

Instead of leading your animal, let your dog do all the steering and see where you end up. If you are in a secure location and your dog is highly responsive when called, let them off the leash and see where they wander. Otherwise, just hold the leash a little looser and let them wander at their free will. You may be surprised where you go!

Go running:

Most dogs love to run, so why not get fit and have them join in too. It doesn’t matter where you go, or if you choose a long distance run or some fast sprints across the oval. They will love to chase you and will push you to run harder and faster! If you do choose sprinting, make sure your pet follows you by giving them a treat and showing them the second treat to encourage them to chase you. We guarantee they will follow you!

Play a game:

We all know dogs love to chase the ball at the park, so why not chase it with them? Throw the ball at a large distance and try and sprint to beat them to the ball. Do that 10 times and you’ve added a great high intensity workout into your routine for both you and your pet.

Climb stairs:

This killer exercise is so great! Stair climbing gets your heart beating while working your legs and glutes. This exercise is also great for high-energy dog breeds who don’t get satisfied at the park. Why not choose stairs near a beach so you can work out, and then both of you can cool down in the ocean afterwards?

Go swimming:

As the hot weather is well and truly here, going swimming will exercise you and your pet and cool you down as well. You can play fetch in the water, or bring along a friend and play piggy in the middle with your dog who will love to chase the ball!

Rescue dogs - At Jetpets we are passionate about rescue pets

As you know by now, here at Jetpets we are passionate about rescue pets. That’s why we were excited to hear from Anne at the RSPCA NSW about some recent rescue success stories!

Tinkerbelle (now named Belle and pictured far right) and Sandy (now named Essie and pictured right) were transported from Sydney to “Rescued With Love” in Melbourne in April. Kae from Rescued with Love kindly offered to take on these two girls which they affectionately named the “Button Sisters” as they were cute as buttons!

Both girls had severe skin infections due to neglect and were in need of some TLC and time to recover before they could be desexed and eventually rehomed. Kae has been taking wonderful care of these 2 girls and their progress can be seen on the Rescued With Love Facebook page.

Rescue pet travel - At Jetpets we are passionate about rescue pets

DeDe (pictured right) was originally at the RSPCA’s Shoalhaven Shelter where she was fostered with her brothers and sisters. A few of the litter were actually deaf so finding the perfect home was a little trickier than usual.

DeDe was spotted on the ‘adoptapet’ website by Pam who lives in Melbourne. Pam had been searching for the right dog for awhile and finally found DeDe. She contacted the RSPCA Shoalhaven Shelter and had a long discussion with the manager to figure out if she was the right person for DeDe. Of course she was the perfect mum and we arranged DeDe’s flight down to Melbourne to her forever home!

The Winter Blues

With the cooler weather well and truly upon us, we are often asked by owners about their pet’s needs in winter.

So we thought we’d clear things up! Here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions…

Winter Blues - how to look after your dog or cat in winterQ: Is it important to exercise our pets in winter, even when it’s freezing outside? 

A: Winter activities will vary widely depending on what kind of pet you have, their personality, and the severity of the weather. When it comes to dogs, they really need to get out all year round, even in colder weather. Dogs who really enjoy the outdoors and colder temperatures can have just as much exercise in the winter as the summer. You can keep your walks shorter for those who don’t enjoy the winter weather as much.

Q: Are coats and jackets a good idea for pets who spend time outside during winter?

A: Some dogs with thin coats will benefit from a jacket, and find freezing temperatures much more enjoyable with the extra layer!

Q: Does my dog or cat need to eat more in winter to help survive the cold?

A: Because people and animals often are less active in the winter months, we often find that people need to feed their dogs less during the winter. If you and your dog are very active, or if your dog is primarily outside, then you may need to increase their food proportionally.

Q: Does my pet still need lots of fresh water, even though it’s cold outside and they may not be as thirsty?

A: Fresh water is always necessary, even if your dog isn’t drinking as much as during the hot summer.

Our Top Winter Tips:

Particularly cold winter’s days can be uncomfortable for slim, younger or older dogs when it comes to nap time. We suggest elevating their bed off the ground where possible, and placing a hot water bottle (with warm not boiling water) into their bed or kennel. This will soon make for a comfortable place to rest!

 

 

 

Famous Furry Friends

It’s a whole new world out there for our furry friends…

 

Did you know that a recent UK survey by the Telegraph found that 13 per cent of cats had their own Facebook page and nine per cent of dogs had their own Twitter account? Two per cent of dogs even had their own blog!

Who are your favourite cool cats and top dogs to follow online? Nicknamed by Khloe Kardashian ‘the cutest dog in the world’, Boo the Pomeranian is arguably the world’s most famous dog and has 16 million Facebook followers – wow! Boo chronicles his adorable daily adventures on social media, much to the delight of his millions of fans!

Oh and who could forget Grumpy Cat, famous for her permanently unhappy facial expression, who has over 7 million Facebook followers. Grumpy Cat is so famous that in 2013, she graced the covers of the Wall Street Journal and New York Magazine, what a feat for a little cat from Arizona!

We recently had our own brush with a famous furry friend here at Jetpets. We were lucky enough to transport Daisy the Pomeranian, who has a very impressive 21 thousand Instagram followers! Isn’t she adorable?

A Pug Wedding

It was a match made in dodgy heaven…

Have you heard about Jasmine & Jasper the pugs? (If not, check out their story here.) These two doggy partners in crime were married in a fundraising event for Pug Rescue on May 17th, at the beautiful West Beach Bathers Pavilion in St Kilda.

The event was attended by 300+ people and 60 pugs guests, with the pug bride dressed by a renowned Melbourne based couture gown designer! It was a lavish affair, with drinks, canapés, wedding cake and music following the adorable ceremony, as well as some inspiring stories of rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming from the Pug Rescue team.
