How to Get Your Pet Involved in Valentine’s Day

Whether you love it or hate it, it’s that time of year again – Valentines Day! But Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about mushy loved-up couples, it’s just as nice spending time with loved ones, including our pets! So how can you get your furry friends involved in your Valentine’s Day celebrations?

Outdoor cinemas

A trip to the movies for Valentine’s is a great idea, whether you’re on a first date, with your best friends or your family. Luckily, most outdoor cinemas welcome pets too! Let your pet tag along to a screening of your favourite film this Valentines Day. Bring along a picnic, some champagne and some dog treats and you’re all set for your best Valentine’s Day yet.

Brunch date

We love any excuse for brunch, so why not take your pet along this year? While you’re sipping a latte and enjoying your smashed avocado, your pup can enjoy it’s very own puppachino!

Fancy food

Valentine’s Day is all about indulgence, so make sure your pets feel special too. Freeze a couple of raspberries in water for the perfect treat on a warm summers day! Or, head to your local pet store and pick up some gourmet goodies for your furry friend as an extra special treat!

Make sure you don’t leave any chocolate within your pets reach, and make sure you keep all balloons and other dangerous toys well out of their way too, so you can both enjoy the day of love!

Including your pets in your summer holiday plans

Australia is definitely the lucky country. Our summers are envied around the world, so we might as well make the most of them! Don’t leave your pet out this year – here’s a list of summer holiday activities that the whole family can enjoy.

Day Trips

Taking a day trip with friends and family is a great excuse to get your pet out of the house and out exercising! Most dogs love taking a trip to the beach, whether they like the water or not. Alternatively, you could take your pup on a picnic to a new park. Bring along their favourite ball or a Frisbee, and you’re set up for a day out that the whole family will enjoy!

Camping

Camping is a quintessential part of Australian culture, and Australian summers! Luckily, some campsites do accommodate for the whole family (yep, including furry-family members). Best Friend Holiday Retreat in Tarra Valley, VIC is practically made for pets. Cabins are completely enclosed in fences, there is a dog-playground, hydrobath, and fenced-off exercise areas! Activities

Whether you’re visiting from out of state, or doing the annual drive to the beach, the Great Ocean Road has many amazing cafes, beaches and walking trails to explore. If you’re planning a trip, then here is a list of our top pet friendly places to stop!

Beaches

Of course, there are almost too many beautiful beaches along the Great Ocean Road to count! Here are a few of our favourite off the lead dog beaches.

Logans Beach located in Warrnambool is a must see if you’re interested in whale watching! Dogs are welcome at Logans Beach off the lead all year long, so if you’re travelling down the Great Ocean Road with your dog then it’s a great place to stop and stretch the legs.

If you’re stopping by Peterborough, then make sure to visit Bay of Islands Costal Park. It’s off lead all year round! Just make sure you have control of your dog at all times.

Take a 40 minute drive down the Great Ocean Road from the Twelve Apostles, and you’ll arrive in Johanna. Johanna Beach welcomes dogs off the lead at anytime, so make sure you bring the SPF and a frisbee!

Cafes

There’s no doubt that Victoria is full of great coffee and great cafes. The Great Ocean road is no exception. If you’re making the treck down the Great Ocean Road, then here are a few local café’s to stop off with your pup.

Swing Bridge Café, 30 Great Ocean Road, Lorne

This seaside beach shack is a great place to stop of for a morning brew with your pup. Grab some St. Ali coffee and enjoy the surroundings with mans-best-friend.

Sticks and Stones, 61 Surfcoast Hwy, Torquay

If you’re looking for a gluten-free-friendly café then make sure to check out Sticks and Stones in the heart of Torquay.

Café Moby, 41 The Esplanade, Torquay

This modern Australian café is a hot spot for dog lovers. Pop in for a coffee after your morning beach walk, and enjoy the view!

Walking trails

If you’re stopping off in Princetown Township, then head to the Serpentine Boardwalk on Old Coach Road East. Dogs are permitted all year round as long as they are on a leash.

The Camperdown to Timboon rail train stretches for 34 kilometers and is located inland off the Great Ocean Road. Whether you’re looking for a hike, or a short stroll, the rail trail is sure to appeal to man and dog! Stop off at the Timboon Railway Shed Distillery for a rest, they provide waterbowls for thirsty pets!

The Silly Season Is Upon Us!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is on its way, and it’s a great time to have fun with the whole family (including our furry friends!)

No matter what your plans are for the festive season, it’s important to involve your pets in the Christmas celebrations to ensure they have a memorable holiday as well!

Read on for some great ideas on how you can include your pets in Christmas celebrations.

Check out the Christmas Lights:

Let’s be honest, most dogs enjoy Christmas decorations and lights as much as we do – so why not take your furry friend for a walk around the neighbourhood to check out the local displays?

Take Photos With Them:

This has to be one of our favourite ideas! Ask a friend to be your photographer (or hire one if you like!) and take a family portrait with all your of furry friends. Add a Santa hat to the top of your dog’s head or tie a cute (but loose) red bow around your cat. Have one of your family members hold the animals and smile!

Customise Your Christmas Cards:

Now that you have some amazing happy snaps of your pets, why not use them to create customised Christmas cards? Not only will they look seriously cute, your friends and family are sure to love receiving them.

Buy Them Gifts:

Gifts shouldn’t just be for humans! Pets are part of your family too so treat them to a special gift you know they will just love. Get a stocking or wrap up a few presents and place them under the tree for you to open with them on Christmas morning. Gift ideas could be toys, treats or snacks or even a new outfit! If you want to, you can splurge on something big that your pet needs or ‘wants’, like a new kennel or comfortable bed to welcome the New Year in.

Make Them A Delicious Treat:

A huge part of the Christmas season is sharing delicious food with family and friends. Include your pets in this tradition by cooking up some pet friendly treats they will be thrilled to eat. Cheesy bites, tuna treats or cookies are fun options, so they can feast while you do too! Make sure you cook animal friendly recipes to ensure you don’t feed them anything they shouldn’t be eating.

Here are some fun DIY ideas:

Dogs: Put some dry food or small treat pieces with a tiny pinch of fresh cinnamon into cardboard containers (you could even use empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls and plug each end tightly.) When your dog plays with the roll, he will smell the cinnamon, hear the dry food rattling around inside and eat his way through to get inside.

Cats: For a simple DIY holiday cat scratcher toy, take an old Christmas stocking made of a heavy duty scratchable material, cut it to open up flat, then wrap it around a piece of wood securing it tightly with twine or using a staple gun. Or – you could use a round piece of wood to create a rolling toy that your kitty will have to chase after.

Halloween and Your Pets

Halloween is just around the corner, and with plenty of treats and scary costumes coming your way, you and your pets are in for some fun!

If you’re keen to get your pets involved in the spooky festivities, here are a few tips and tricks to remember to ensure everyone enjoys the celebrations.

Dress them up:

Not that we needed another excuse to dress up our furry friends, but this Halloween why not get into the spirit and play dress ups? We love the idea of wearing matching costumes with our pets, just make sure there are no zips, pockets or embellishments that your pet can easily chew off. For some fun dress-up ideas, click here.

Take photos:

Now that you’ve got your pets all dressed up, why not have a photoshoot? Ask a friend or family member to take some photos of you and your pets all dressed up – we guarantee you will cherish these photos for a lifetime. Need some tips on how to take amazing happy snaps of your pet? Click here.

Make them treats:

While there are plenty of lollies and chocolates to go around for us humans, it’s important to keep these treats away from our pets and feed them pet-appropriate food only. But this doesn’t mean they need to miss out on the fun! Why not make them some delicious pet-friendly biscuits they will love!

Keep them safe

While Halloween is great fun for us humans, it’s important to be weary of common things that can put our pet’s health at risk. Here are a few tips:

Keep all lollies and chocolate out of reach of pets. If you have these treats in the house, make sure you keep them on high tabletops and keep an eye on your pets at all times.
Thanks to the constant ringing on the doorbell and strangers turning up in funny costumes, your pet may understandably get a little frightened! To avoid any unnecessary stress, why not keep your pets away from the front door, and make sure you keep them entertained with their favourite toys.
Keep decorations away from pets as we all know how much they love to chew and play with just about anything!
With many people coming and going, it increases the chance of your pet leaving the house through open doors. Just in case that does happen, make sure their ID tags are updated and that they are microchipped so they can be easily returned home if they go wandering.

What happens when your pet travels on an aircraft?

The captain of the aircraft is aware that your loved one is on board their flight
The captain will set the temperature to approx. 18 degrees celsius so that they are comfortable
The pets cabin is dimly lit so that your loved one can see what is going on around them
What we feel and hear in the cabin of the plane is the same as what your pet will experience (except in a travel crate they have much more leg room than us!)
