Humphrey’s Rescue Tale
This week, we were proud to fly Humphrey the cat from Melbourne to Brisbane where he was reunited with his owners after he went missing over 6 months ago!
Susan and her family were in the process of moving the whole family from Bendigo in Country Victoria to Brisbane in January this year, including their two dogs and cat that were booked in to travel with Jetpets. Unfortunately the day before they were due to travel Humphrey went missing.
The family was extremely surprised that Humphrey went missing, describing him as a lazy fat cat. And despite desperate measures to try and find him, they had to make the heart breaking decision to move to Brisbane without him.
They have missed him immensely, and have wondered often what happened to him. Last week Susan received a call from a vet in Bendigo with the fantastic news that Humphrey had been found!
‘I was overwhelmed when I spoke to the vet, who said that Humphrey had most likely been on his own for the past 6 months,’ said Susan.
Yesterday was the exciting day that the whole family was reunited! Humphrey travelled with us from Melbourne to Brisbane where his family was waiting for him.
The Winter Blues
With the cooler weather well and truly upon us, we are often asked by owners about their pet’s needs in winter.
So we thought we’d clear things up! Here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions…
Q: Is it important to exercise our pets in winter, even when it’s freezing outside?
A: Winter activities will vary widely depending on what kind of pet you have, their personality, and the severity of the weather. When it comes to dogs, they really need to get out all year round, even in colder weather. Dogs who really enjoy the outdoors and colder temperatures can have just as much exercise in the winter as the summer. You can keep your walks shorter for those who don’t enjoy the winter weather as much.
Q: Are coats and jackets a good idea for pets who spend time outside during winter?
A: Some dogs with thin coats will benefit from a jacket, and find freezing temperatures much more enjoyable with the extra layer!
Q: Does my dog or cat need to eat more in winter to help survive the cold?
A: Because people and animals often are less active in the winter months, we often find that people need to feed their dogs less during the winter. If you and your dog are very active, or if your dog is primarily outside, then you may need to increase their food proportionally.
Q: Does my pet still need lots of fresh water, even though it’s cold outside and they may not be as thirsty?
A: Fresh water is always necessary, even if your dog isn’t drinking as much as during the hot summer.
Our Top Winter Tips:
Particularly cold winter’s days can be uncomfortable for slim, younger or older dogs when it comes to nap time. We suggest elevating their bed off the ground where possible, and placing a hot water bottle (with warm not boiling water) into their bed or kennel. This will soon make for a comfortable place to rest!
Pippa’s Reunion!
Did you hear about Pippa the cat, who survived 49 days without food or drink after becoming accidentally trapped in a shipping container and travelling interstate? Well now for some good news for this lucky cat… We were very proud to reunite Pippa with her owners today!
On 20 February, Pippa the cat found herself a snug spot in the neighbour’s shipping container in Darwin which was then transported all the way to Brisbane. Miraculously Pippa survived her ordeal after 49 days without food or drink. Pippa has remained in Brisbane where she has been recovering with a foster carer and under the watchful eye of a vet. Pippa has now returned to good health and today we proudly flew Pippa from Brisbane to Darwin to be happily reunited with her owners Rebecca and daughter Emily.
Rebecca and daughter Emily adore their cat Pippa and have missed her terribly. Rebecca feared that Pippa would need to be permanently re-homed in Brisbane, concerned that another travel journey would be too traumatic. When the story of Pippa’s plight came to our attention, we contacted Rebecca with an offer to reunite her with Pippa. As you know, we fly thousands and thousands of pets around the country and globe every year, and reassured Rebecca that it was possible to safely and comfortably fly Pippa home.
With the fantastic news earlier this week that Pippa had returned to wellness, Rebecca was thrilled to hear that this reunion could take place today. First thing this morning we collected Pippa from her foster home in Brisbane, where she was made to feel comfortable and content in her travel crate, ready for her flight home. Thankfully and as expected the return trip home was far less eventful, with flights running on time and Pippa comfortable in her travel crate. At the other end, we were ready to collect Pippa at Darwin airport, where she was transported in a purpose built vehicle to her home.
Of course, the best bit comes next. After an eventful and worrying four months, at long last Pippa was reunited with her owners Rebecca and Emily this afternoon. It was tears and hugs of joy (and purrs) all round. We feel very proud to have played a part in reuniting this family.

Happy Travellers – Summer 2015
There are few things we love more than seeing our furry friends being reunited with their families!
Here are just a few of the gorgeous ‘happy travellers’ that flew with Jetpets over the summer months.
Rosie recently travelled with us from Sydney to the Big Apple – New York! (And yes, we may be just a little bit jealous!) Rosie’s owner Heiko sent us this adorable photo of Rosie in her new home, and some great feedback:
“Hi Danielle,
Just a quick note to say that we all arrived well and safe in New York. We were able to pick up Rosie from Lufthansa Cargo at JFK and it was all straightforward. She was so happy to see us, but we may have been even happier to see her. I even got a call from Pet Express Animal Transport to make sure everything was in order.
Rosie is settling in okay in New York – it’s very cold at the moment so she’s still getting used to that I think. Attached is a picture of Rosie in her new winter outfit. Thanks again for all your help, Heiko”
We Love Rescue Pets!
Are you, or someone you know, thinking about bringing a new pet into the family? We get it, falling in love with a pet is easy (trust us, we fall in love every day!) However, adding a furry friend to your family is an incredibly important decision, and should never be taken lightly. Dogs, cats and small animals are of course living beings that require a considerable amount of time, money and commitment — over 15 years worth in many cases.
However, if you have made the important (and well considered) decision to welcome a new furry family member, get ready for a wonderful experience!
When selecting a pet, there are a number of different options available, but we believe adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue organisation should always be the first port of call. Not only will you be giving a beautiful animal a second chance at a happy life, but the shelter or rescue organisation will also have a number of different breeds available, (including pure-breds in many cases,) as well as pets at all different stages of life, not just kittens and puppies. This means that the shelter or rescue organisation will be able to work with you to select the perfect pet to suit your family and lifestyle.

ut why are we so passionate about adopting a rescue animal? It’s always been a cause close to our hearts, but became all the more important when we met our Animal Ambassador, Sahara.
Sahara is an amazing little Koolie Kelpie Cross that was saved from death row by Victorian Dog Rescue. She was found abandoned and mistreated, wandering around the bush in Mildura in country Victoria. Without a home to go to, she was taken to the pound. The day before she was due to be put down, she was rescued and has since lived with Jetpets Pet Handler, Dave Higgins just outside of Melbourne.
As soon as we met Sahara, we fell in love and knew we had to join with her and Dave in raising awareness for rescue animals. In December 2012, Sahara travelled around Australia doing just that, on her ‘Tour de Woof’ which you can view here.
Jetpets currently have strong partnerships with organisations such as Pet Rescue and Australian Working Dog Rescue and happily help facilitate the transport of these amazing animals to their ‘fur-ever’ homes wherever we can.
